Binalot

Binalot is one of the dining choices in the more popular malls in the Metro. For the price, this is surprisingly good actually. But other than the attractive price, what caught my eye was the menu. The names of the different dishes were very amusing. They have the Bistek Walastik, the Vivo Tocino, the Tapa Rap Sarap, the Love Me Tenderloin Tips, and Pride Tilapia to name a few. Native sounding dishes with a humorous twist.

We always order to-go. Our neat little packages are wrapped in brown paper like these.

But that is not why they call their store Binalot. This is why. You open your little package and out pops your dish even more neatly wrapped in banana leaf! Now that is the ultimate native touch.

Our personal favorite? The Bistek Walastik. Tender beef slices with that distinct 'bistik' taste on top of steaming rice, with red egg and tomato on the side.... dinner is served. Unfold your banana leaves and get ready for a hearty treat.

  2. hi bloghopping from senor enrique's site. the food looks good, what is it made of?

  3. Mukhang masarap talaga. I think the banana leaf enhances the taste of food wrapped with it.

Before the advent of aluminum foils, plastic wraps, tupperwares and the like - there was the banana leaf which was abundant in everybody's backyard.

  4. mimi,
plus, they are very affordable diba. i heard too that aside from the malls, the branches of Binalot are often near schools and universities. i guess one of their target customers are the students. ang mura nya kasi.

    Belle TH ,
nice of you to come by. yea, it is good. the one in the photo is my husband's and my favorite. the Bistik Walastik made of beef strips cooked the Beefsteak pinoy style. this is topped over steaming rice and there are sidings of itlog na maalat and tomatoes. some dishes have achara as the side dish. you should try it! you might like it too.

    rhodora ,
yea. the banana leaf helps seal the juices somehow of the food wrapped inside diba. i think it is still widely used these days. they still wrap our native suman, and even embutido in them.
yea, Binalot is good. and really cheap.

  8. Hi. I came here from Senor Enrique's blog (I was intrigued when you said you wanted to be a teacher but ended up a doctor ... I wanted to be a doctor, my late father - a doc - put his foot down so I ended up teaching. But no regrets.)

I've read a lot about Binalot but have never tried it. Because of your post, it's now on my list when I next go to Manila.

You're too young to know this but "walastik" was an expression we had when we were kids. :)

  9. hi bugsybee! glad you visited. yea, i wanted to be a teacher. but my mom dissuaded me. ok lang naman. life turned out to be just as fulfilling for me anyway.

been to your site too.. i love your blog entry about Growing Old... it hits a spot, really.

oh, and im quite familiar with the Walastik term. am not really that young-ish anymore either. hehehe... life begins at my age, you see.

keep in touch. oh and by the way, my sister who is in arizona, who is also a teacher, is also a "Bugs". that has been her nickname since high school. coincidences!

hope you enjoyed my blog...feel free to browse around some more... do visit manila soon!
