Mangan

When my bilas in Hawaii came to visit last week, he had with him a computer print-out of a page taken out of some blog , that wrote about Mangan Restaurant. And that was where he wanted to eat so we took him there.

We picked the branch at Robinson's Place, Manila, because that was the branch nearest us that time.

We chose a table by the wall that was interestingly and uniquely decorated with these portraits of famous Filipinos.

We had a feast. It felt sinful to indulge in so much food!

They had free crispy camote strings for appetizers.

Then came our soup, Sinigang na Sugpo sa Miso. The warm sabaw was a welcome treat for our hungry stomachs.

Off to the main courses: Take your pick!

The Pork sisig came wrapped in banana leaves.

Bistik na Bangus and Embutidong Bangus...

Inihaw platter and Kare Kare...

Really Crispy Pata...

Garlic Fried Rice and the Kapampangan's Burong Hipon

We had slices of fruits in season for dessert.... mangoes, oranges, apples, pineapples, papayas and melon...

It was a good thing Mangan had small servings, save for the Crispy Pata and the Inihaw Platter. Otherwise, we would have all been bursting at the seams. My bilas said Mangan was everything he had expected.

  1. Hi Gita,

    What does Mangan translate to?

Eating at Mangan somehow reminds me of those bus stopvers to the province. Iba talaga ang lutong Pinoy! =)

  5. Gita! Wow...another dining place to go to. Food looks good. Will try the Bistik na Bangus, Inihaw Platter, Crispy Pata. And the price? I wonder who owns this chain of Mangan(that's EAT in Kapampangan or Ilocano). Have you tried my favorite yucky dish at KABALEN's ... fried adobong mole cricket? Next time, bring your bilas there and try that restaurant along West Avenue in QC or at SM (Ortigas?). Mangan Tana! Let's Eat. Thanks for the feature.

  9. Just got back from Hollister, CA for the 60th Hollister Bike Festival and been dining on fastfoods and American buffet and then I come home see these foods on your site, I say that is not fair! Although I have daing na boneless bangus in the freezer, nothing can compare to that fare you just displayed to torture us here in the states with! my Ilokano friend said Mangan means kain as in "Mangan ta yun!" or kain na tayo!

  13. the burong hipon is "balo-balo" or "tagilo". It is different from the burong isda or "buru" made from Candaba. Balo-balo is made from Guagua. The mole cricket, 'kamaru' is sauted with tomato and sometimes crispy fried but the juice runs out and dries the 6-legged creature. the fried potato strings is new fare. Gita, i am Kapampangan and you made me home sick. I will try bistek na bangus this week though the milk fish sold here is not as fresh as the ones back home. i am proud to be one of the first Angeleño to try Aling Lucing's Sisig in Angeles back in 1978. It was experimental then and the rest is histroy. It is the addition of crushed roated chicken liver that gives its distinct taste. There's a different version though and the pig ears and cheeks are steamed, chopped bite size and soaked in soy sauce, vinegar, chili and fresh onion rings. You should try this but watch out for your cholesterol level.

  17. Its kapampangan coz I here that a lot back in uste, 'Mangan tayon!' (or how Noypetes spelled it) which means "Kain na tayo!" and kapampangans are known for being great cooks and they do not eat with only a single dishes on the table, obviously the servings you showed prove that....andami daming food!

  18. giz, one more thing i like about mangan, hindi sha big servings and reasonably priced sha. kaya pwede ka mag order ng madami nang hindi mabigat sa bulsa. ;-)
